This module will introduce students to the most important features of sustainable green chemical products.

The student will become aware of the principles and general tools of Green Chemistry; of the most important awards for recognizing the successful green chemicals; of the general guide lines for the design of more sustainable and less problematic chemicals.

Moreover, successful important examples of new alternative green products will be presented.

In this module the relationship between sustainable chemistry and renewable sources will be explored. The main components of biomasses will be presented, comparing the structure of fossil feedstock with that of renewable feedstock. The central concept of biorefinery will be introduced, illustrating different types of pre-treatments of biomass affording bio-platform chemicals that feed the biomass-based chemical industry for the production of chemical compounds, biopolymers and biofuels. The diversity of biorefineries and examples of existing biorefinery will be presented. Finally, the main biofuels (bioethanol, biodiesel, biogas and bio-hydrogen) and the “generations” of biofuels will be critically analyzed.
